Terrace Downs, Canterbury

At Terrace Downs, Mother Nature herself provided the foundations for the perfect golf course. The resort's 550 acres of pristine High Country are set against the dramatic backdrop of the Southern Alps - creating a course that is as picturesque as it is challenging.

Located within an hour's drive of Christchurch International Airport in the heart of the Canterbury high country, Terrace Downs is a luxury getaway destination catering to guests of all ages. The resort features deluxe accommodation, award winning cuisine and numerous on site activities.

pic2Terracedowns.jpgThe 18-hole, par 72, championship course features four different tee positions for the enjoyment of players of all abilities. At a length of 6,440-metres, it includes 11 lakes and 70 bunkers with something to test even the most experienced golfer. Players will remember every hole, use every club in their bag and eagerly anticipate the next day's play. The golf course is also complemented by a generous driving range and short-game area, as well as world-class services including a large fleet of electric golf carts, high quality standard and executive hire clubs, shoes and trundlers.

Perhaps the most spectacular golf hole on the front nine is the par-5 seventh. The longest and maybe the most challenging par-5 on the course for even the big hitters, it plays 551-metres from the back tees and winds down onto a lower terrace, where the fairway meanders between and lake on the right and a bunker on the left. Reaching the green in three shots is an achievement for most, as very few players ever make it in two.

Possibly the most exhilarating hole on the course is the diminutive par-3 16th. Only 130 metres from the back tees, it's not the length of this hole that stops you in your tracks, it's the scenery. The tee box hangs on the edge of the gorge and towers about 200 metres above the Rakaia River that tumbles along below.

This golf course has some of the most scintillating views of any in New Zealand (as all Best of Golf New Zealand courses are renowned for) so it's common for players to blame their lack of focus for their missed putts. Now there's an excuse!

Facilities

In addition to the superb golf course, Terrace Downs boasts several other on-site activities including horse safaris, jet boating, clay bird shooting, archery, blokarts and massage.
