Jacks Point Golf

With a backdrop of 2300 vertical metres of the razorback Remarkables mountain range and an armchair view of an outstanding lake and mountain panorama, Jack's Point Golf Course is not only one of the most spectacular in the world, but as an 18 hole par 72 championship course it offers golfers of any calibre a challenging and unforgettable experience.

_DSC0055_1.jpgThe course works with nature, not against it. Designed with minimal excavation, the 6388 metre (7088 yard) course is built on the most spectacular of Jack's Point terrain, weaving through tussock grasslands, dramatic rock outcrops, steep bluffs and swathes of native bush to the edge of Lake Wakatipu.

Just as the rough-hewn stone walls adjacent to the fairways evoke its high country farming heritage, so the entire Jack's Point Golf Course has been designed to take full advantage of its history and terrain - raw, dramatic and wild. With preservation and restoration of surrounding wetlands, matagouri and native bush, each hole has been carefully aligned to a magnificent backdrop, offering the player a full 360 degree experience of the high country landscape.

With a variety of teeing options, golfers of any level will enjoy this course.

Jack's Point is the latest in a series of Darby Partners golf masterpieces, which includes Clearwater, near Christchurch (home of NZPGA championship for the past 5 years, a co-sanctioned event with the Australian and USPGA nationwide tours), neighbouring Millbrook Resort Course and The Hills Golf Course, (the host of The New Zealand Open, a Nationwide Tour event).

Key Hole Descriptions

  • The 5th - An exciting "dog leg right" par 5. The tee shot requires a straight drive to reach the elbow, where the stronger hitters will be able to challenge the green in 2 shots. The seeming difficulty of this hole is compensated with the surprise view as you arrive at the green: a sudden exposure to the panorama of Lake Wakatipu, from Queenstown to the western skyline.
  • The 7th - A short, downhill par 3, John_Darby.jpgwhere club selection is the key, teeing off from an elevated position to the green below. It almost seems as if your ball might fly beyond the green into the lake itself, a cleverly designed illusion making the hole appear closer than it is, (something golf course architects have been attempting to repeat since the golden era of golf design in the 20’s and 30’s). John Darby, who studied golf course architecture at Harvard University and has been the principal designer behind many of New Zealand's leading courses, rates this as one of his favourite holes. The views are stunning, looking straight across Lake Wakatipu to Hidden Island, so named because from the Queenstown side of the lake it is impossible to see.
  • The 9th - A demanding par 4, as you turn the corner you come face to face with the buttress of the Remarkables looming above. Teeing off from here, your ball seems to hang forever skyward, a white dot lost in the recesses of the mountain range, the fairway bordered by 3-400 year old matagouri and native bush.
  • The 15th - reminiscent of the highlands of Scotland, this challenging par 4 hole has 4 elevated tee locations to choose from, all striking across rolling grasslands, rock walls lining the fairway, with sheep grazing either side and Cecil Peak looming over the green.

The Clubhouse

JP_Clubhouse_Exterior.jpg

Sited at the southern end of the lake, the clubhouse consists of a Golf shop, locker facilities, bar, restaurant, and extensive north-facing patios which run beside the lake edge. A prominent feature of the building is the use of 100 year old timber trusses, providing a roof line reminiscent of an old barn or woolshed. A large outdoors fire at the north-western end of the building will provide a focal point during the winter months. The clubhouse connects to the lake edge via a large jetty.

The Clubhouse Restaurant

With an emphasis on fresh, seasonal, locally sourced and often organic, the cuisine and coffee at Jack's Point is of the highest standard.

At the Clubhouse restaurant, for example, the style of cuisine is contemporary New Zealand, sourcing local game, seafood and seasonal fruit and vegetables; the service personal yet unobtrusive.
